Reunion 2010
Report by Christine Johnson
MOUNT OLD
SCHOLARS’ ASSOCIATION
Joint
Reunion 2010 with Bootham Old Scholars.
14-16th
May 2010
This year was a Special Reunion Year for Old
Scholars of both Schools who had been at School during the 1930’s and
the 1940’s. It was so good to welcome so many to the Reunion. Some who
had started in 1931, several who were over 90 years old and several who
had travelled a distance to be in York.
The theme for the weekend was “WHEN WE WERE YOUNG”
It started on Friday evening at Bootham. This part
concentrated and the War years when the Schools were evacuated to
Ampleforth and Cober Hill.A brief film lasting a minute showed boys at
Ampleforth while a longer film of two minutes showed Mount girls at
Cober Hill. Both films had been taken by Alan Pickard.
This was followed by several Old Scholars sharing
their own memories of those years and their return to York.
We were grateful to David Gray for coordinating
this part of the programme which made a very good start to the weekend.
On Saturday morning M.O.S.A. gathered at the Mount
and for the first time for several years it was not Parents weekend.
This was much appreciated by Old Scholars.
The A.G. M. was held in the Hall and was well
attended. We were particularly pleased to welcome Julie Lodrick as
Principal and to have the Head Girl and her Deputies with us who each
told us of various activities that have been happening in the School.
At the conclusion of the A.G.M Hester (Mounsey)
Willink unveiled the new M.O.S.A.
Presidents’ Board and frame which are hanging in
the Hall Foyer alongside the Boards for the Head Girls and Lydia Rous
Scholars.

Gillian(Saville)Barron
There were nine former Presidents present to see
the unveiling. The names in the frame reach back to 1879 and the names
on the Board start in 1979.

Lunch for approximately 50 Old Scholars in the
Dinning Room and then the opportunity to visit the activities in the
School Feteor to write postcards or simply chat and catch up with all
the news etc.
In the evening 112 Old Scholars gathered at the
Racecourse for the Joint Reunion Dinner.
Two innovations this year, firstly The Mount Swing
Band entertained O.S. to some lively music during the Reception –this
was very well received and then instead of the usual Heads reports we
were given an “entertainment” by the Principal of The Mount and the
Headmaster of Bootham. Questions were thrown to us but I am not sure
they got truthful answers from OS……..
Dinner was followed by the Presidential Address.
Colin Henderson known to many OS of both Schools as Bursar was at
Bootham 1947-1949. He gave an excellent Address based on his career
telling many of the aspects of the Schools history not really known to
OS.
Sunday broke and another fine day. This found OS of
both Schools in the Hall at the Mount with some Boarders as we embarked
on Part 2 of WHEN WE WERE YOUNG- this time covering the time after the
evacuation. Stories were told, some sent by OS were read and songs sung
including The White Cow and the Matric Song 1936. We were grateful to
Mel (Littleboy) Nash 1936-1940 for accompanying us at the piano. We
concluded with the Mount School Song before going into Meeting. All the
Boarders joined us for this and we appreciated their contributions to
the Meeting for Worship.
Lunch for all in the Dinning Room and real help
from the girls for those who fund the slf service a little tricky.
The weekend ended with those who were at School in
the thirties chatting in the Principals Study with all those stories of
long ago…… We hope these have been recorded for the Archives.
It was a good weekend and we thank the School for
making us so welcome and the Older OS for making such a good
contribution.
Do feel free to send in any more Pictures or comments you have to the website
so that others may enjoy something of the weekend although they may not
have been able to be there in person.
